The Row-a-Fun Challenge
During May 2019, businesses in Ipswich and Colchester took part in an exciting workplace challenge, The Soma Leo Foundation Row-a-Fun. Teams of around 10 people, competed to row as far as they could during the month, collecting sponsorship money as they rowed.
The event was a huge success raising over £10,000 for the charity and rowing a collective distance of over 4,000 km, equivalent to rowing from the port of Felixstowe to Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada.
Nine teams took part: AXA, Concertus, MHA Larking Gowen, Hiscox, Prettys and four teams from Pound Gates.
The Challenge was won by The A Team from Pound Gates, who rowed a staggering 1,011,246 metres, equivalent to rowing from the port of Felixstowe to Marseille in France.
The event was organised by Pound Gates, whose directors, managers and staff are involved with the charity either as Trustees or providing all of the administrative resources the charity requires.
It was also supported by Suffolk’s Most Active County Partnership. Lynda Bradford, Head of Health Improvement for Suffolk Public Health commented: “We spend around 60% of our waking hours in the workplace so it’s sometimes difficult to build activity into daily life. It’s fantastic therefore to see local businesses creating opportunities for their staff to be active. We hope more businesses will develop initiatives like this. After all we know a fit and active workforce has a direct benefit on productivity.”
